For those who grew up in the 1980's you might remember the original Nintendo Entertainment System accessory known as the Zapper. It was a gray or bright orange light-gun that let you shoot at ducks, bull's-eyes, and banditos with pin-point precision whilst sitting in front of your television set.


Now nearly 20 years later, the lads at Nintendo have released another Zapper. This time for their latest console - the Nintendo Wii.

Except this new model is a lot simpler. The new Zapper has no electronics and just a couple of moving parts. Instead it is a stylishly curved, matte-white shell that is meant to house the Wii-mote and the nun-chuck controllers that come with the Wii.

Since the launch of the Wii many customers have felt that the shape and design of the Wii-mote wasn't very well suited to long periods of gameplay. Holding a remote control directed at the screen at arms length can be tiresome and sometimes even difficult to keep steady.

This is where the Zapper is perfect and combines the two controllers to make a two handed device with a more comfortable arm positioning. Plus it resembles a futuristic gun that is perfect for first-person shooting games as well.

Those people who think that $60 may be a bit pricey for a piece of plastic will be relieved to hear that the Wii Zapper comes with a game called Link's Crossbow Training. This Wii exclusive title contains a series of games perfectly suited for the Zapper and is probably worth the price-tag alone.

Set in a Zelda-themed world, the game isn't the most complicated title on the market but will be great for children and even for the bigger kids who want to brush up their target practice.

Mini-games include the traditional Carnival favourite moving bull's-eyes, fending off hordes of skeletons advancing upon you and even trying to hit skulls that fly across the screen. Despite the horror themes Link's Crossbow Training is definitely kiddie friendly and a sure crowd pleaser for anyone with a Wii console.

The Zapper is also compatible with other shooting games such as Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil and the Medal of Honour series.
